It was not until the arrival of the Binet-Simon Scale which was immediately revised and became known as the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, that the United States started to put to use the idea of intelligence testing.

Intelligence testing became useful to the military during World War I, in which psychologist Robert Yerkes created the Army Alpha and Beta tests (Cherry, 2013). These tests were created to help determine what positions and roles the men were capable of holding (Cherry, 2013).

By the end of the war, intelligence tests had other uses besides determining the aptitude of soldiers. The United States started to use them for things such as screening immigrants, in which this led to the demand for immigrant restrictions (Cherry, 2013).
